Can You Say Salam to Animals?
You can and should offer salams to animals, for the same reasons you do it for brothers and sisters. Here’s why:
When you greet others with salam, you wish them peace, mercy, and the blessings of Allah SWT. It also fosters goodwill between you and reminds them that you come to them in peace and will not harm them.
Muslims are united against cruelty to animals. Muslims would not harm animals unnecessarily—our faith forbids it.
The Quran reminds us that animals are believers too and worship Allah SWT in their own ways, even if we can’t understand them. Why would you not wish your fellow creatures peace and mercy?
Consider this: Animals are likely greeting you more than you think; you just can’t understand their language. Have you ever lived with an animal who seemed to approach you and vocalize when you entered your home? Scientists have concluded that cats, dogs, birds, cows, and other domesticated animals “greet” the humans in their lives. If we have a duty to respond to the salam from our brothers and sisters, why should we not extend the same gesture of peace and goodwill to our fellow creatures? What harm does it do?
